I think that every Blog I have done has this title somewhere in it! It seems that all old cars will have something that will just stop you in your tracks and make you wonder about your own sanity when you could be doing something else that's actually productive!
The day started off great with a 6 mile hike with my Buddy Harry but rapidly deteriorated quickly when I started on the Stagnator. I decided that the air filter housing needed some corrosion protection so I coated it with 'Endrust' and will put a couple more coats on it in the next couple of days. Then I thought I'd take off the rear wheels since Bill wanted to pick them up to get the new tires on them, see the last blog for the details of this debacle. No sweat, get the car up in the air and pull them off, started on the drivers side and quickly had it off and on the floor-'piece of cake' (there was a PBS mini series called Piece of Cake a few years back that was about a British Spitfire Squadron at the beginning of the war, and just about every time one of the pilots said Piece of Cake they were shot down). Well the better part of three hours later I had that SOB off! I wiggled it, I PB Blasted it, I levered it, I got my super duper gear puller out and tried that, then I tried the puller and hit the tire from the inside. Finally I got serious and use d my brass drift a four pound sledge and the puller to get it loose. I would pound on it for a minute then tighten the gear puller and repeat, two hours later it was off!

| No, I didn't do this with removing the wheel but interestingly it was the wheel that was so hard to remove |
| The air filter box needed a little TLC to keep the paint from deteriorating further and flaking off into the carbs. |
| The offending wheel |
| Close up of gear puller, I bought this 40 plus years ago from Sears and it's been a life saver more than once and I have really torqued on it. |
| This is what I found on the drivers side, we need a new wheel cylinder and brake shoes for both sides but this side is leaking |
| Brake shoes glossy from brake fluid |
| This is the hub that was stuck so badly, yes there was corrosion but I don't think that's what made it so hard to pull. On close inspection the hub was badly worn. A spline on a new hub looks like a flat topped triangle, this one was sharp and 'wind blown'. It wouldn't heve been long till this hub would have spun inside the wheel. |

| Notes from today |
Looks a bit precarious but it's actually pretty well braced/supported.

Well, that's it for a few days till Bill brings me some parts. I suspect that it will be a week or so till I'm able to move on with this.
Cheers,
Lynn
